9 June 1943 Combat instructions for strongpoints and resistance nests Annex 167
To the 716th, 709th and 319th Infantry Divisions. Combat instructions drawn up for strongpoints and resistance nests are often too lengthy and contain generalities of little use to their commanders. Good combat instructions are usually reflected in the clear, confident reports of commanders and individual soldiers.
Instructions should include a clear mission for the commander; tasks for individual men and weapons; arrangements for transmitting orders and reports; and sentry, patrol and security duties by day and night. Tasks must take account of the particular weapon, its capabilities and the terrain—positions, ravines, roads and so forth. Required cooperation with another resistance nest must be included. Commanders and garrisons must also know which batteries can support them.
This is not intended as an exhaustive specification. No other directives, orders or regulations belong in it. Above all, avoid a rigid template. Immediately simplify or supplement combat instructions accordingly. Make combat missions particularly brief and simple, and explain them through clear, simple sketches.
