Diary Entry

8 November 1942 Channel Islands on the mid November army situation map

Date note: Map validity 8–19 November; placed at the first date.

Map: Situation of Seventh Army, 8–19 November 1942.

Legend: black, Army Group reserve; red, Army reserve. The original colour distinction cannot be reliably recovered from this monochrome scan.

The map shows the Channel Islands, including Guernsey, Sark and Jersey, with 319th Division indicated at Guernsey; mainland coastal sectors and formation headquarters across Brittany and Normandy; Seventh Army headquarters at Le Mans; LXXXIV Army Corps at Saint-Lô and XXV Army Corps at Pontivy. A line marks the rear boundary of the coastal combat zone.

Principal labels include 257th Division at Landerneau, 343rd at Guingamp, 709th at Lamballe, 716th near Caen, 320th at Valognes, 165th at Tocqueville, 17th near Quimperlé, 182nd at Auray, 346th at Coëtquidan, 333rd at Redon from 13 November, 6th Panzer at Rennes, and SS Division Das Reich at Saint-Lô. Artillery Regiment 1 (self-propelled) is shown at Mayenne with a movement arrow dated 20 November; a marginal note says it is again in the army area from 19 November. Division Hermann Göring is marked as moving away between 6 and 10 November; 6th Panzer's annotation indicates departure from 12 November, partly crossed out.

The original map is retained for the full deployment symbols, boundaries and small or overwritten movement annotations; not all tiny annotations can be read securely.
