8 December 1942 Command arrangements on Jersey
Editorial note: Report of a visit on 7–8 December 1942; the heading is on PDF page 73. This passage records discussion of command responsibilities, not confirmation that all disciplinary powers had already been transferred.
It is necessary to place all units on the island of Jersey under a brigade headquarters commanded by Major General von Schmettow, which in turn is subordinate to the Commander of the Channel Islands, the commander of the 319th Infantry Division.
The Commanding General states that this arrangement already exists for operations and training, but not for disciplinary matters. He asks that it be retained.
The Army Commander points to the difficulties which have apparently arisen and which require a clear regulation. He agrees that the Commanding General should discuss the matter with the commander of the 319th Infantry Division during his forthcoming visit and submit a proposal in accordance with the Army Commander’s intentions.
