Diary Entry
7 July 1942 Horses and drivers to be supplied by 319th Infantry Division
O 5 travelled to 23rd Infantry Division and checked the lists of weapons, equipment and ammunition there.
Only minor discrepancies were found, resulting from changes in authorised establishments and the arrival of new equipment. Where minor deficiencies in weapons, equipment or ammunition were found, remedial action was arranged after examination by the senior quartermaster’s weapons and equipment or ammunition sections.
The division firmly expects delivery of the promised 1,754 horses, together with harness and drivers, from 319th Infantry Division. The latter had not yet received the order calling them forward. They are, however, to be called forward without delay.
At present, 450 motor vehicles of the division are fully operational; a number of other vehicles are under repair.
Editorial note: Related entry concerning the island garrison division. Complete diary entry for 7 July. O 5 is retained as the source’s staff appointment designation.
Cross-reference: 7 July 1942 Part 2, Zeitzler’s letter (T-78 Roll 317, scan 1043), and 30 August 1942 Part 5 (T-78 Roll 317, scans 1040–1041). These are related source accounts concerning the allocation of 319th Division’s horses, not additional horse transfers to be totalled together. The July diary describes an expected delivery and outstanding call-forward order, not completed delivery.
