[Scan 1043.jpg] Chief of General Staff, Army Group D. Headquarters, 7 July 1942. Reference: Chief of Operations Branch no. 20341/42 secret (IIa), 3 July 1942 [printed date partly corrected]. Ia no. 1851/42 secret. Dear Heusinger, Many thanks for your letter of 3 July 1942, which arrived only yesterday. I am glad you wrote.

The letter came at just the right moment, for I had already scheduled a flight to the Channel Islands at the end of this week as my next coastal inspection. There I shall examine the questions you raised on the spot and report to you next week. For now: 1. I disposed of 319th Division’s horses long ago. They are not standing about unused. I have lent some to 23rd Division. Some are intended to make the artillery reserve mobile. 2. I have long considered converting 319th Division into a fortress or positional division, but wished to make the final decision dependent upon my Channel Islands visit. So I shall write next week. Warm greetings and Heil Hitler. Yours, Zeitzler.
