7 August 1944 Part 2

Summary

US Navy — Signal challenges, illumination and return from patrol.

Location Details

St Malo; Cézembre; Cherbourg

Diary Entry

7 August 1944 US Navy Maloy challenged and illuminated off Cézembre

Editorial note: Continuation of the 6–7 August supporting patrol; Cézembre lies off St Malo, outside the Channel Islands.

At 0351 an enemy signal station on a small island west of Cézembre challenged the force. No reply was made. Moonlight and fires from Allied bombing of St Malo silhouetted the islands, and channel navigation lights were visible. At 0512 the station challenged again with the letter W. At 0525 the Cézembre battery fired two illuminating projectiles: range was correct, but deflection was about 3000 yards to the right. At 0535 Maloy increased to 20 knots and headed for Cherbourg as daylight approached, anchoring at 1220. [G page 1]
