6 October 1944 Civilian evacuation shipping and coal requirements
Channel Islands: according to the naval commander, fifteen convoys would be needed to evacuate approximately 52,000 islanders from Guernsey and Jersey. Vessels suitable for this purpose [continued].
Sufficient suitable vessels are available. The naval commander points out, however, that even if the nearest port, St Malo, were used, the evacuation voyages would require the islands’ entire coal stock.
Naval War Staff has meanwhile stated by telephone that the Foreign Office has decided to raise the question of evacuating the island population with the International Red Cross.
