Diary Entry

5 October 1942 Alert Level I ordered along the coast

Editorial note: Additional dated readiness instructions applying to the islands; an alert is not evidence that an attack occurred.

Reports from Moscow increasingly indicated Stalin demanding early British action on the western front. Because of current weather and sea conditions, Commander-in-Chief West ordered Alert Level I from 21:00 on 5 October in the coastal combat zone only, between Seine and Loire, including the Channel Islands. It applied to all services’ forces assigned to land defence there and was to end only by special order.
