5 May 1942 Loss of Favorit on the Jersey coast
Editorial note: Extract concerns the night of 4–5 May. Mainland context in the source paragraph is retained.
In fog during the night of 4–5 May, the 226-ton steamer Favorit grounded on the Jersey coast. Everyone aboard was rescued, but the vessel was lost. Civilian morale remained strongly influenced by British French-language broadcasts. Economic conditions and bread supply were poor in the towns, while spring vegetables eased conditions in the countryside and on the Channel Islands. Conduct towards German troops remained reserved but generally not hostile. One cable-sabotage case and suspicions of espionage around Coutances were recorded. Personnel changes were listed separately.
