5 January 1943 Expanded Schockland sinking report
Editorial note: Supplement to the existing 5 January accounts. The earlier Roll 1603 edition described a grounding; the expanded edition explicitly says sank. These are initial reported figures, not a reconciled final casualty total.
5 January, 01:30: The leave ship Schockland, carrying about 300 men on leave, struck an obstruction on Jersey’s south coast and sank. The initial report lists 131 missing and eight dead.
