4 September 1942 Army Group orders an immediate investigation of the missing Casquets garrison

Date note: New command correspondence concerning the raid already recorded under 3–4 September. The initial strength of eight naval personnel differs from later accounts.

Secret command matter. Teletype to LXXXIV Army Corps headquarters and simultaneously to the 319th Infantry Division; Seventh Army Headquarters for information. Dispatched 4 September 1942 at 19:50; received at 20:08.

According to Naval Group West, the garrison of the Les Casquets lighthouse, west of Alderney, has been missing for about two days. It consisted of three wireless operators and five naval servicemen.

The Commander of the British Channel Islands is to report what is known about the matter and immediately institute a thorough investigation, to clarify it and report to Commander-in-Chief West as quickly as possible. Did the commander know that Les Casquets was occupied? Were army personnel there? An immediate answer is required, if necessary an interim report.

Commander-in-Chief West, Army Group D headquarters, Operations Section, No. 2641/42, secret command matter.

[The garrison strength here differs from later reports. It has not been harmonised with them. Handwritten routing marks remain in the image.]
