Diary Entry

4 September 1942 Alderney Harbour Commandant diary

Light cloud, visibility 12 nautical miles, W 2–3, sea 1–2. 0710: FK 08/21 returned from patrol. 0920: Fast boat SA 5 arrived from Guernsey; departed there at 1550. 2140: FK 04/21 went to patrol position.

1515: Signal station reported: “Les Casquets no longer occupied; garrison disappeared.” FK 08/21, which had gone to the lighthouse, established this. The garrison was apparently taken away by an English commando during the night of 2/3 or 3/4 September.

The diary adds retrospectively: on the orders of Commander of Sea Defence Channel Islands, since 6 September Les Casquets has been subordinate to Island Commandant Alderney in all defence matters and occupied by an infantry unit. Since 15 September, the Alderney and Les Casquets lighthouses have been subordinate to Harbour Commandant Alderney for personnel matters. [The uncertainty over the date and the later administrative changes are retained as recorded.]
