Diary Entry
4 October 1942 Alderney fire on a probable false radar contact
Editorial note: The report itself questions whether a real vessel was detected.
Telephone report to Seventh Army at 12:55: Luftwaffe radar at Cap de la Hague detected a ship between the cape and Alderney. Alderney fired harassing rounds; radar then reported it moving towards Guernsey. Naval radar did not confirm it and no German ships were at sea. Naval Commander Normandy considered a false detection probable. Fog lay over the sea.
