Diary Entry
4 June 1942 Exercise assessment of interrupted island links
Date note: The concluding assessment is dated 4 June 1942 on its opening page, local scan 00358 (parallel copy 00904). It discusses the hypothetical 26–27 May exercise scenario, not an actual combat incident.
EXERCISE EXTRACT. The corps situation includes bombing of Théville, a landing attack in Machine-Gun Battalion 17’s sector, shelling of Cherbourg and interruption of the telephone link to the islands. All headquarters order Alarm Level II; no divisional or corps reserves are moved or committed.
“I consider these measures correct. Although the parachute drops indicated an attack against Brest and Lorient, it would have been premature to move reserves on a large scale at this stage.”
