Editorial note: Only August 1943 is securely legible in the supplied translation; the day is faint, apparently 24. Filed at month end without assigning a certain day.

Secret. Commander, 3rd Security Division, August 1943 [day faint, apparently 24]. Reference G 5768 AIII. To Commander of Security Forces West; copies, two, to the 46th Minesweeping Flotilla. Subject: flotilla war diary for 16–31 July 1943. One enclosure.

The war diary for 16–31 July is submitted in one copy, the engineering section in two copies. The questionnaire on the performance of motor-boat and auxiliary-vessel formations for July 1943 is enclosed in duplicate.

Page 5, 26 July, 03:45: it has not yet been established why the enemy failed to attack despite the entirely accurate position report. He was close to the 46th Minesweeping Flotilla. Perhaps he sought more worthwhile targets, namely freighters, or poor visibility thwarted his intended attack.

Page 13, 27 July: the preceding night a coastal post heard the engine noise of a vessel moving back and forth in the Lézardrieux entrance. This report prompted ground-mine checking, since ground-mine contamination could be suspected.

Page 22, 29 July, 23:06: it is not apparent whether the drifting otter was recovered. Additional instruction to the 46th Flotilla: submit a report on this.

Page 24, 31 July, 01:53: a copy of the combat report and the division commander's comments are enclosed. [Signature.]
