Commanding Admiral France telegraphed in secret command matter 8219, duty officer, of 29 September:
“The Führer increasingly expects that the British will attempt landings on the Channel Islands for political reasons, and regards the recent landing of a small party on the mainland coast as a precursor of similar operations.
He therefore orders: 1. Commander-in-Chief West is continually to review defence preparations on the islands and ensure the highest readiness of the island garrisons. 2. The greatest possible use is to be made of mining along the coast. 3. The maps held by Armed Forces High Command, showing the situation on 18 and 20 July respectively, are to be brought up to date. In addition, defence plans on an even larger scale showing coastal batteries etc. are to be submitted. 4. Addition by Naval War Staff: ensure support for the special measures ordered by every available means.”
Addition by Naval Commander Western France: Strengthen lookout and security posts under suitable leadership also within your own area, and ensure the closest attention, especially at night. Conduct gate checks particularly rigorously and examine all suspicious persons. Review infantry defence and establish contact with Army offices. Regulate leave within garrisons so that full combat readiness of the batteries is assured at all times.
Turn over.
