Diary Entry
29 December 1942 Channel Islands excluded from naval garrison proposal
Editorial note: The memorandum is dated 29 December on PDF page 161 and records a visit on 21–22 December. This passage belongs to the discussion at La Baule on the evening of 21 December. The Channel Islands are expressly excluded from the proposed Navy garrison policy.
The changes in the garrisoning of the Atlantic islands agreed with the Navy have been rejected by Commander in Chief West and Army High Command, because Army High Command intends to require, as a uniform policy, that all islands, excluding the Channel Islands, be garrisoned by the Navy. A decision of the kind sought by the Army is therefore not to be expected in the foreseeable future.
