Diary Entry

Continuation: 28 October; entries for 29 October 1944

The splinters had cut a groove 2 × 3 mm deep in the roller cage along the rear rollers.

Cause: when entering from Brest, a loosened retaining ring allowed the cone to move forwards. The beating of the shaft probably caused a fine hairline crack. An older fracture was clearly visible in the longitudinal crack. The broken pieces and splinters caused loud, dull noises and vibration.

The damage could not be repaired with the means available. The vessel was out of service until installation of the shaft support bearing requested under FT 0415/23. Naval High Command West and the Commander of Fast Attack Craft were informed accordingly by radio message 14.04 KKW.

A courier voyage by F.K. 01/56 from Guernsey to Jersey was arranged for 13:00 on 29 October to carry an Army serviceman requiring urgent specialist ophthalmic treatment in Jersey.
