Diary Entry

28 October 1942 Retention of weapons for island counterattacks

The new establishments remove heavy machine guns, light mortars and antitank rifles from infantry regiments. Apart from heavy mortars, infantry would then lack the heavy weapons needed for counterattack or local counterstrokes. This conflicts with the army commander’s demand for more mortars. Corps therefore requests retention of heavy-machine-gun mounts and sights, light mortars and antitank rifles. If this cannot be granted throughout, retain them at least for one battalion in each regiment so the reserve battalion can be properly equipped.
