Diary Entry

28 June 1940 Reports from Air Fleet 3

Secret command matter. [Handwritten heading partly illegible; refers to Air Fleet 3.] Receipt: 28 June 1940.

1300: Air Fleet 3 orally confirms the reconnaissance results for the English Channel Islands on the afternoon of 27 June, adding that the islands’ coasts were flown over at an altitude of 200 metres. No countermeasures of any kind were observed on the islands.

The conclusion has not yet been drawn from this result that the islands are undefended against both air and sea attack. Their completely ignoring the German aircraft is somewhat suspicious.

1610: Air Fleet 3 reports reconnaissance results for the British Channel Islands at 1115 on 28 June. Jersey: at St Helier, two transports loading, vehicles on the quay. Guernsey: one transport at the quay, about 150 vehicles on the quay. Air Fleet proposes immediate reconnaissance in force. Admiral France agrees.

The office of the senior naval meteorologist has been established and staffed.

Editorial note: These are the contemporary German reports and assessments, including their stated assumptions about military occupation.
