27 May 1944 Normandy radar reports concerning the Channel Islands

Normandy radar reporting station — 1944-05-27

Night 27/28 May. Wind NE–NNE2–4, visibility 8–12 nautical miles, sea 1–2. 1950 fighter attack with aircraft guns on FuMO51 La Pernelle. Two Mustangs approached from south, departed north. Approach altitude 2,500 m, then dived, whereupon set’s anti-aircraft guns immediately opened fire. No hits observed. No casualties or damage to set, property or weapons. 1720 enemy Typhoons attacked FuMO51 Cap de la Hague II strongpoint, dropping several rocket bombs in dives. Heavy aircraft gunfire hindered set’s anti-aircraft defence. No casualties or damage to property or set; only slight material damage [source distinction retained]. 1755–1805 fifteen fighter-bombers attacked Cap Lévy radar with aircraft guns. One dead in strongpoint, an Army member. FuMO2 and 214 slightly damaged, reported serviceable shortly afterwards. Stone house heavily damaged. No personnel casualties [apparently referring to radar personnel].

Radar situation: exceptionally good radar weather with exceptionally great ranges. FuMO2 Arromanches received enemy transmissions 0031–0120 in 30°–40°. Six own E-boats Cherbourg northwards and back not detected. Following contacts by Normandy interception network and Air Force large search station Tausendfüssler, FuMO51 La Pernelle directed onto them and from 0202 produced detections of several small enemy targets.

Normandy radar reporting station — 1944-05-27

Continuation of 27/28 May. From lower centre BF3538 via 3561 to right centre 3538; lost 0340 at 270 hectometres. Probably enemy fast boats intending to intercept own boats from Le Havre. Second group, also small targets, 0305–0346 from left-edge centre BF3562 to left centre 3562, possibly a single boat. Guernsey II radar 0312–0320 sea targets appearing very uncertain, from left-edge centre BF3548 to upper-left corner 3548. Since Alderney simultaneously reported light at 220°, assumed enemy targets. After three very uncertain detections, locating signal “target lost” sent. Notification of 3rd Security Division delayed 18 minutes by line difficulties.

FuMO51 Cap de la Hague II0347–0458 several ships from lower-left edge BF3534 through 3531 to 3198, clearly distinguishable, probably SGBs. FuMO2 Hague I0333–0529 several very clearly distinguishable sea targets from lower centre BF3534 via 3523–3531. Because unusual sector and abnormal ranges, to be regarded as false contacts. FuMO51 Hague II2308 at 949 hectometres, several ships from centre BF3156 to centre 3164 to lower-left corner 3164, very clearly distinguishable. Lost 0231 at 922 hectometres. FuMO214 Cap Lévy tracked same targets on second time-base sweep 0037–0114 at 900 hectometres.

FuMO51 Cap de la Hague II new target detected 2315 at 793 hectometres, from lower-left corner BF3159 to 3183, upper centre 3191, upper centre 3192, centre 3196, centre 3192, centre 3191, centre 3183, centre 3182. Lost 0538. FuMO2 Hague I tracked same targets 2339–0615, several ships very clearly distinguishable. FuMO2 Hague I new target 0336 at 950 hectometres from upper-right corner BF3193 via 3169 to lower-edge centre 3166, several ships very clearly distinguishable. Lost 0400 at 1,074 hectometres. Normandy interception network took bearings 0013–0458 in same sea area on targets (fast boats) detected by FuMO51 La Pernelle from 0202. Continuous enemy locating signals. All detections to Commander E-boats, Channel Coast Radar Centre and Sea Commandant. Nine locating signals for navigational assistance.
