26 May 1942 Alderney Harbour Captain diary
Partly cloudy and rainy, visibility 8 nautical miles; SSW 5–6, gusting 7, slight sea. 0625: HS 183/192 returned from patrol. 1400: The anchor chain of steamer Roslea, lying at anchor, broke. No second anchor was aboard. The ship drifted out of the harbour and could not turn into the wind under its own power; tug assistance became necessary. The first attempt to bring her to the pier failed. She again drifted across the harbour broadside to the wind, was caught by the tug and towed alongside Midland, causing insignificant collision damage to the latter. 1415: Vp 202/207 arrived from Cherbourg with Claus, Schwalbe and Heinrich; departed for Cherbourg at 1635. 2240: HS 28 went to patrol position.
