Diary Entry

25 April 1945 Kirk suggests a possible diversion from the Channel Islands

Source: Commander US Naval Forces France, second endorsement to MTB Squadron 30 letter of 1 March 1945, file A16-3, serial 0923, stamped 25 April 1945, signed A. G. Kirk; supplied screenshot S44.

Summary: Kirk forwarded the report concurring in its stated results. He observed that a three-knot south-west set could have carried wreckage or bodies offshore, and suggested that the small craft might have been a diversion drawing attention towards possible landings from the Channel Islands on the Cotentin Peninsula before the raid on Granville. Delay in forwarding was attributed to the need to obtain fuller endorsements.

Editorial note: The diversion explanation is explicitly a possibility. It does not confirm German ownership or a Jersey origin. The page also bears a manuscript date above the address; the entry uses the clearly visible 25 April stamp and retains the complete image for comparison. Cross-reference the same 28 February action.

Cross-reference: NAV-19450228-CAP-DE-LA-HAGUE. The 1 March report and 17/25 April endorsements document the 28 February engagement; administrative entries are not additional engagements.
