Diary Entry
24 January 1943 Night sailings for Channel Islands leave passengers
Commander-in-Chief West has requested examination of transferring leave-passenger sailings from the Channel Islands [continued].
1550 (continued) — Whether leave-passenger sailings to and from the Channel Islands can be transferred to daytime. The question arose from the loss of Schokland. These sailings were originally moved to night because of the severe air threat and shortage of escort vessels. They can operate by day only if Air Fleet 3 can provide adequate fighter cover, which is scarcely possible with its present strength. Commander-in-Chief West is informed accordingly; he agrees to retain night sailings and informs the Army authorities.
