Diary Entry
24 August 1943 Mehlem escort diary Jersey and Saint Malo
24 August, 00:25, near Ida 2: tug Normandie II had fallen astern and failed to notice the turn to port, so the convoy had to be split. Report G 2937 dated 24 August. To inform escort office of the separation, I sent the following radio at 02:30: after an unsuccessful aircraft bombing attack on M 4616 and Normandie II at Ida 2, Normandie refused to continue owing to sparks from her funnel. Passage delayed. I am continuing with remainder; M 4616 and M 4613 following with Normandie II. Wind SE 2, sea 1, low dark clouds, visibility 10 nautical miles.
04:00: M 4610 anchored with convoy in Saint-Malo roads. 04:50: M 4616 and M 4613 anchored with Normandie II and lighter. 13:00: boats and convoy entered lock and secured at berth. Signed Mehlem.
