Diary Entry

23 September 1942 Army requests radar coverage for Alderney

Date note: The later operational confirmation of 29 September is entered separately.

Seventh Army headquarters. Army headquarters, 23 September 1942.

Ia No. 4177/42 secret. Draft.

Subject: Detection equipment on Alderney

To Naval Command Channel Coast

The absence of sea-target detection equipment on Alderney repeatedly proves a serious deficiency. In favourable conditions, the equipment installed at Cherbourg and on Guernsey can detect larger ships east and west of Alderney, but not in the most threatened sea area north and north-west of the island. In poor conditions, these sets fail to detect small ships north-east and south-west of Alderney even within the artillery's effective range.

Army headquarters requests installation of sea-target detection equipment on Alderney within an Army strongpoint.

For Army headquarters, the Chief of Staff: [signature].

Distribution: Naval Command Channel Coast; LXXXIV Army Corps headquarters for information; Seventh Army Ia and Ia/War Diary. Dispatch annotation: 23 September 1942.
