Diary Entry

22 July 1942 — St Malo Convoy Control Office

Weather: west, moderate to fresh breeze; variable cloud; visibility 8–10 nautical miles; slight to moderate sea with heavy westerly swell.

02:00, St Malo — M 1204/05 sailed with Livadia, Karel and Holstein for Guernsey, delayed by fog. Arrival by daylight was accepted because only forty men on leave were aboard. 05:25, Alderney — V 203/02 arrived from the outpost position. 07:00, Jersey — V 711/24 arrived alone, delayed by fog. The Ad. le Prince troop convoy to St Malo was not carried out and was postponed until the following night.

09:00, Guernsey — V 713/29 reported by radio that they were sailing for St Malo, contrary to instructions to await orders from the 3rd Security Division for return to Brest and their replacements V 712/08 at Guernsey. Harbour Commandant Guernsey stated by telephone that they had not sailed, so an order from the head of the Convoy Control Office to return to Guernsey initially appeared unnecessary. It subsequently emerged that they had sailed. [The handwritten marginal annotation is not securely legible.]

09:15, Guernsey — M 1204/05 arrived with the convoy from St Malo; they released the convoy and were to return to St Malo after taking aboard [the following overtyped reference is unclear; the previous translation’s V 211 cannot be confirmed here]. 11:15, Guernsey — V 713/29 returned and were informed through the harbour authority that they were released from the Convoy Control Office and were to await the 3rd Security Division’s orders for Brest. [Continuation missing at this point in the scanned sequence.]
