22 February 1943 Firing on ships concealed by smoke during an attack on the islands Enclosure to Annex 101

Copy. Corps Headquarters, Ia 1463/43 (722), secret, to the Admiral Commanding the Channel Coast.

During a map exercise concerning enemy landings on the Channel Islands, the question arose whether it is advisable to continue engaging concentrations of transport ships that have concealed themselves with smoke, provided the ammunition situation allows it.

Corps Headquarters would appreciate an assessment of two questions: under reasonably favourable weather conditions, can a large transport fleet be completely screened by smoke, or will gaps always remain? Can it be engaged with the aid of detection equipment despite artificial smoke? Signed: von Heiterer, Chief of the General Staff.
