Diary Entry
21 May 1943 Part 3 Objection to closing Granville as an island supply port
Army Headquarters cannot approve the Navy’s intention to give up Granville harbour and supply the Channel Islands only from St Malo and Cherbourg. The resulting concentration of supplies, together with congestion of railway traffic at St Malo, gives enemy air attacks increased opportunities for effectiveness. In addition, the small vessels which have proved particularly useful for supplying the islands cannot be employed from St Malo. The sea transport chief at St Malo also opposes giving up the harbour for these reasons. Army Headquarters asks Army Group to intervene with Naval Group Command for the retention of the harbour.
