Diary Entry
21 April 1942 Review of the St Malo diary for 16 to 31 March
3rd Security Division, G 2138 AIV/Br., 21 April 1942. Secret. To Commander of Security West, two copies; information to Convoy Control Office St Malo. Subject: diary 16–31 March; one enclosure. The diary is submitted in one copy.
On page 8, 24 March: the narrative shows V 210/V 208 sailing Jersey–St Malo with three steamers, but the situation report omits this. It is also unclear whether V 207/V 204 escorted Holstein Guernsey–Alderney on 24 March: the narrative says heavy sea prevented departure, whereas the situation reports completion, and the 25 March report has the pair sailing Alderney–Cherbourg.
On page 12, 29 March: the shortage follows from the flotilla’s operational state. Besides two boats undergoing shipyard work, four others were temporarily unready, while a pair was unexpectedly assigned to protect Olwe. At times only one pair each remained for Cherbourg and St Malo convoys. The shortage was relieved by assigning patrol pair 704/1510. [This is the review’s designation; the daily diary uses 710/04.] On page 15, 31 March: the situation report omits V 204/V 207’s passage Guernsey–St Malo.
Additional instruction to St Malo: the first-half March review already required each day’s diary to follow time order so that narrative and situation reports do not contradict one another. Codes such as Anton, Gustav and Jacob are to be avoided in the diary. Signed Hans Hartmann.
