Diary Entry
2 November 1942 Channel Islands influence the planned defence of western Normandy
Date note: Army decision of 2 November repeats the assessment in its 25 October proposal. The protection attributed to the islands is the German command’s judgement, not a new Allied operation.
Employment of 348th Infantry Division in two geographically separated coastal sectors is no disadvantage. In a major enemy landing it is expected that only its regiment on both sides of the Vire will become heavily engaged, while the west coast appears largely protected against major landings by the offshore Channel Islands. This deployment also leaves divisional headquarters available to direct a coordinated counterattack with the corps reserve regiment or further local reserves.
