Diary Entry
2 July 1940 Naval personnel and harbour organisation on the islands
Scattered rain, overcast, clearing towards evening. Return flight to Cherbourg. Discussion with the chief of staff of Air Fleet 3, Lieutenant-Commander Weber from Naval Commander Northern France, and Lieutenant-Colonel Gené, commander of Infantry Regiment 396. Afterwards a joint flight to Guernsey and Jersey.
The naval assault detachment is being withdrawn. On Jersey, one officer and 41 NCOs and men are placed at the disposal of the commandant, Major Lanz [as written], for about eight to ten days; on Guernsey, two officers and 49 NCOs and men. The Army is then to relieve these men too. The Navy has taken over the harbours on both islands and will establish branch offices of the Cherbourg harbour commandant.
The Navy will also establish a steamer service between the mainland and the islands as soon as possible, probably between Portbail and Jersey, and between Jersey and Guernsey.
