19 March 1942 Third Security Division reviews second-half February convoy diary
Third Security Division, Secret G 1390 AIV/Br., 19 March 1942. To Commander of Security West in duplicate, copy St Malo Convoy Control Office. Submits one copy of the diary for 16–28 February.
On the 16 February communications note: the need for improved Channel Islands communications was generally recognised; a separate teletype office for Security West flotillas at St Malo was supported. The two sections held ready under the 17 February 13:00 entry protected the passage of minelayer Ostmark. Troop transports should be spread evenly to avoid intermittent overload and the increased risk.
The investigation of M 4006’s 18 February incident was still incomplete. Her commander had meanwhile been relieved. In the 19 February 14:00 entry, substitute “signal personnel” for “signal”.
Concerning the 21 February 10:00 inspection, “Granville Bay” and “Chatherines Bay” offered good anchorages, although approach was not entirely straightforward. [Names as typed in the review of the Gorey and St Catherine’s visit.] The convoy office was asked which harbour commandants had activated the harbour-protection wireless frequency and whether stations were ashore or on harbour-protection boats. Weather details were missing from column 2 on most pages. For the division commander, First Admiral Staff Officer [signature uncertain].
