Diary Entry

19 July 1944 Part 2 Island batteries engage ships and Battery Blücher reports a probable sinking

Between the Channel Islands and the west coast of the Cotentin peninsula, enemy ships were sighted from 04:30 throughout the morning. In the sectors of the coastal batteries on Alderney and Jersey, enemy targets were forced to turn away. Coastal Battery Blücher on Alderney set an enemy ship on fire. Following a violent explosion, the sinking could not be observed because of poor visibility, but it is assumed with certainty [the German report’s assessment]. Between 11:20 and [17:20?; the second time is faint], three enemy ships seven kilometres east of Sark were engaged by anti-tank guns. The effect of the hits could not be observed.

During the evening and the night, activity in Brittany consisted only of incoming flights by individual enemy aircraft, with bombs dropped in the Angers and Rennes areas and between Saint-Malo and Avranches.
