19 July 1944 Part 1

Summary

Coastal battery firing or engagement. Air or sea observations

Location Details

Alderney; Sark; Cap de la Hague; Battery Annes

Diary Entry

19-20 July 1944

Batteries Annes and 12./1265, Alderney, engaged two motor torpedo boats and an Atherstone-class escort destroyer south of Alderney. After numerous reported hits the destroyer was observed burning, with a heavy list and its stern low in the water, before drifting towards Cap de la Hague. The accompanying boats appeared to take off members of its crew. The batteries fired 243 rounds; the high expenditure was attributed partly to Sark obstructing observation for the coastal batteries.
