Diary Entry
17 October 1942 processing of comments on the Casquets report
Secret comment on the Sea Commander’s diary entry of 4 September 1942: paragraph 51 of the mobilisation command regulations made the Sea Commander responsible for all naval matters in his area. This had already been communicated by Naval Commander on the Channel Coast order Gkdos 2200 A Ib, second copy, of 6 July 1942. If uncertainty about subordination remained after the new command was established, as the report admitted in the case of military care for Casquets, it should have been reported immediately to the Naval Commander for an immediate decision, instead of planning a later arrangement with Normandy.
Editorial note: the draft has a deleted final paragraph stating that the command arrangements had no causal connection with the events and had meanwhile been settled by an application to transfer personnel from Harbour Commandant Cherbourg’s wartime establishment to Alderney’s. This paragraph is absent from the clean copy and is preserved here only as deleted draft text.
