Diary Entry
17 April 1945 Cherbourg endorses the February action report
Source: US Naval Advanced Base Cherbourg, first endorsement to MTB Squadron 30 letter of 1 March 1945, serial 00315, stamped 17 April 1945, signed L. B. Ard; supplied screenshot S43.
Summary: The base forwarded the report, concurring in its stated results. The action area had been closed to vessels as a free gunnery area. Attempts to identify the craft had failed; no wreckage or bodies had been discovered. The targets sighted by the PTs had not appeared on Joburg’s main radar screen, and a stationary radar target four miles west of Cap de la Hague was assessed as probably spurious. Lt (jg) J. M. Boone was commended for handling the hazardous assignment.
Editorial note: This endorsement supports the patrol’s account but does not identify the craft, establish their origin or independently prove a sinking. Cross-reference 28 February and 1 March; no additional engagement is counted.
Cross-reference: NAV-19450228-CAP-DE-LA-HAGUE. The 1 March report and 17/25 April endorsements document the 28 February engagement; administrative entries are not additional engagements.
