16 October 1942 Meaning of heightened readiness and night order
Editorial note: Additional dated readiness instructions applying to the islands; an alert is not evidence that an attack occurred.
Heightened defensive readiness requires all coastal machine guns, heavy infantry weapons and guns ready for action, with strengthened patrols as divisions direct. Moderate winds and seas and possible morning haze prompted another order from 21:00 on 16 October for the entire army coast and islands. Divisions reported cancellation next morning; corps notified army that readiness ended at 08:30 on 17 October.
