Diary Entry

16 June 1944 Part 3 Request to withdraw mobile anti-aircraft units from the Channel Islands

Date note: 16 June 1944.

Secret Command Matter. Urgent.

Seventh Army Headquarters, Ia. 16 June [1944]. To Army Group B Headquarters.

For the information of the Air Force Liaison Officer.

The Commanding General, III Anti-Aircraft Corps, reports that with the forces available, heavy anti-aircraft protection is currently possible only in the Caen area and west of it. Anti-Aircraft Regiment 3, which was employed near Isigny, has suffered heavy losses. Anti-aircraft protection is inadequate for the Saint-Lô area, western Cotentin and the operational concentration area.

Enemy road-strafing aircraft cause daily casualties and losses of irreplaceable vehicles. Even individual motorcyclists are fired on.

Army Headquarters urgently requests:

1. Placement of the fully operational anti-aircraft battalions of the 2nd and 5th Parachute Divisions under II Parachute Corps.

2. Withdrawal of all mobile anti-aircraft units stationed on the Channel Islands.

3. Withdrawal of all mobile naval anti-aircraft forces from Lorient and Saint-Nazaire fortresses.

After dispatch: war diary. Seventh Army Headquarters, Ia No. 3001/44 Secret Command Matter.
