Diary Entry

16 June 1943 Enemy intelligence 1

Secret. No enemy landing attempts. On 8 June, 02:10–02:39, two naval artillery batteries engaged detected naval targets sixteen to twenty-six kilometres northwest of Guernsey. The targets turned northwest. At 03:10, Les Casquets lighthouse, ten kilometres west of Alderney, reported motor-torpedo-boat noises and searchlights to the north; the noise ceased at 03:39.

6 June, 03:28: an unidentified aircraft dropped a bomb near Les Casquets lighthouse; no damage. 12 June, 19:30–19:45: about thirty twin-engined bombers attacked Carpiquet airfield, six kilometres west of Caen, dropping sixty to seventy bombs. No casualties and only slight property damage. One twin-engined bomber shot down and completely destroyed, its crew probably burned; another aircraft probably shot down. 14 June, about 13:00: a German fighter shot down a Mosquito eight to ten kilometres northeast of Argentan. One parachute descent observed; search unsuccessful.

15 June, 06:15: about twenty enemy aircraft attacked five German minesweepers six kilometres east of Sark. Five aircraft shot down. One minesweeper sank, its crew being taken aboard the other boats. Losses: two dead, two missing and twenty-four injured; see Armed Forces communiqué of 16 June. No sabotage during the reporting period.

Other matters: on 13 June, a German air-sea rescue aircraft recovered an Englishman in a drifting inflatable dinghy nine kilometres north of Jersey. He said he had been at sea for seven days. He had no papers and was taken to hospital. Signed Heyn, Major.
