15 September 1942 Security and garrisons of the island lighthouses
Date note: Report dated 15 September 1942. Security assessments are the German headquarters’ conclusions.
Seventh Army’s report on security of naval posts gives the following Channel Islands arrangements:
(a) Corbière lighthouse. Personnel: one NCO and eleven men of the Army and Navy. Further reinforcement is impossible owing to lack of space. Surrounded by wire. Security through fire support from a resistance nest 600 m away appears adequate.
(b) Sark lighthouse. Incorporated in an Army strongpoint.
(c) Hanois lighthouse, 1.6 km off the western tip of Guernsey. Only intermittently manned. Infantry protection is ensured when it is manned.
(d) Les Casquets lighthouse. Personnel: one naval NCO and eight naval men. Security: one Army officer, two NCOs and eighteen men, with five machine guns and one light mortar. Wire obstacles have been ordered. Security appears adequate.
