Diary Entry
Assessment by the Commander, Naval Defence, Channel Islands
1. The reasons for the commanding officer’s decision to use the alternative position for the minelaying are accepted. The decision is approved.
2. The short signal QQPE was not heard at the shore radio station until 00:49 (see War Diary, page 247) and was confirmed by radio message 0059 (see War Diary, page 247). It was subsequently established that S 112 had received none of the transmitted messages. According to the station commander, the switched-on radar set had interfered. The information was subsequently checked by Naval High Command; the radio personnel were replaced with good operators from Naval High Command.
3. The commanding officer, Leutnant zur See der Reserve Nikelowski, carried out the operation skilfully and conscientiously. His thorough navigation off St Malo merits special recognition.
