Diary Entry

14 September 1942 St Malo Convoy Control Office

Weather: Northerly, weak winds; cloudy to overcast, with light precipitation; visibility under three nautical miles.

0300, Cherbourg: V 705, M 1204 and V 722 sailed with Planet in tow for Guernsey. 0500, Alderney: V 209 and M 1207 sailed with RO 21 and Robert Müller 8 for Guernsey.

Remark: An earlier sailing of this troop convoy was impossible because of the current. To carry out the transport, the last part had to be completed in daylight. I approved this because recent experience and this morning's forecast indicated hazy to foggy conditions during the morning; this proved to be the case.

0730, Malo: M 4604/01 independently to Granville. 0825, Guernsey: V 209 and M 1207 arrived with convoy from Alderney. 0930, Guernsey: V 705/22 and M 1204 arrived with Planet from Cherbourg.

Requests: (1) Planet and Robert Müller 8 Guernsey–Malo; (2) combined convoy Granville–Jersey–Guernsey; (3) evening convoy Alderney–Cherbourg; (4) night troop convoy of 14/15 September, RO 21 and Minotaure from Guernsey, La France and Guynemer from Jersey to Malo. I assign M 4611/05 to (1), M 4604/01 to (2), V 209/M 1207 to (3), first independently Guernsey–Alderney, and V 707/05/M 1204 to (4).

1000, Guernsey: M 4611/05 sailed with Planet and Robert Müller 8 for St Malo. 1030, Guernsey: V 704/22 sailed to Lézardrieux to collect F 6 for night passage to Brest under the division's orders. 1030, Guernsey: V 209/M 1204 [as printed] independently Guernsey–Alderney. 1030, Granville: M 4601/04 took over Claus-Wilhelm, H 16, H 67, Tourane, Compt. 51, Mazagan and Maas for Jersey–Guernsey. 1200, Malo: V 710/24 arrived at the Convoy Control Office's disposal. 1400, Jersey: M 4601/04 released Claus-Wilhelm, H 16 and H 67 and continued to Guernsey. 1400, Cherbourg: V 209/M 1207 arrived from Guernsey. Dense fog made entry to Alderney impossible, so the intended convoy from there could not be taken over. Given the weather, there is no objection to daylight passage despite Commander, Security Forces West's prohibition.

The following was sent to 3rd Security Division. Situation for 14 September: (1) V 209/M 1207 completing the night troop convoy Alderney–Guernsey with Robert Müller 8 and RO 21, then independently Guernsey–Alderney for convoy Alderney–Cherbourg with two coastal motor vessels; (2) V 705/22/M 1204 with Planet Cherbourg–Guernsey, then M 1204/V 705 as in item 3 and V 722 as in item 4; (3) V 707/05/M 1204 night troop convoy from Guernsey with Minotaure and RO 21, and from Jersey with La France and G. Guynemer, to Malo; (4) V 704/22 independently Guernsey–Lézardrieux, then with F 6 by night to Brest under the division's orders; (5) V 212/08 at 2nd Security Division's disposal; (6) M 4611/05 daylight convoy Robert Müller 8 and Planet Guernsey–Malo; (7) M 4604/01 independently Malo–Granville, then combined convoy Granville–Jersey–Guernsey; (8) V 710/24 arrived at Malo at the Convoy Control Office's disposal. Escorted tonnage: 11,600 GRT.

Intentions for 15 September: (1) V 209/M 1207 escort Cherbourg–Alderney and return; (2) V 707/05/M 1205 [as printed] completing the night troop convoy Guernsey–Jersey–Malo, then M 1204 at 12th Minesweeping Flotilla's disposal and V 707/05 as item 7; (3) V 212/08 combined convoy Malo–Jersey; (4) M 4611/05 ready at Cherbourg; (5) M 4604/01 ready at Guernsey; (6) V 710/24 escort H 2, towed by Vollmar and G.
