Diary Entry

14 September 1942 correction concerning the 14 August ship-movement report

Secret. Naval Commander Channel Coast, G 17231 A Ia, headquarters, 14 September 1942 [handwritten day as read]. Draft instructions for two letters; despatch markings dated 16 September.

1. To Sea Commander Channel Islands, subject ship-movement reports. The diary entry of 14 August at 03:30 states that Vp. 704 and 707 sailed Lézardrieux–Cherbourg without reporting their intentions or departure. This was probably an error attributable to the Channel Islands communications system, which was not then working faultlessly. The 3rd Security Division had announced the boats’ intended St Malo–Cherbourg movement through the ship-movement service, also distributed to Sea Commander Channel Islands. Vp. 707 had additionally radioed on 13 August, time group 2123/40, its intention to sail with Vp. 704 for Cherbourg at 23:00.

The 3rd Security Division was asked to include Sea Commander Channel Islands in distribution of situation reports and intentions as well as ship movements. 2. To 3rd Security Division: include Sea Commander Channel Islands in situation-report distribution; “and intentions” is struck through in this second instruction. Remaining marks are administrative routing.
