Diary Entry

14 October 1943 Mirus and Strassburg construction and readiness

Editorial note: Extract from the report dated 17 October 1943 on the Commander-in-Chief’s tour of 13–16 October (Roll 1558 scan 1068, Operations No. 5213/43 secret). Placed here under the inspection date. Imported from the supplied English translation; its uncertain readings are retained.

Asked by the Commander-in-Chief whether Guernsey’s infantry defence had improved, the divisional commander replied affirmatively and reported that 43 strongpoints and resistance nests had been constructed in the first line and eleven in the second. Jersey’s fortification was still better. Concrete shortage made further catching up on Guernsey doubtful. Construction of Mirus Battery had used 47,000 cubic metres of concrete, and the medium-heavy Strassburg Battery 20,000 cubic metres: 45 percent of the concrete had thus been used for just two batteries. Mirus Battery was reported ready to fire again.

Inspection drive on the island, Appendix 2. 1. Regimental command post, Grenadier Regiment 584. Colonel Oelze, commander of Grenadier Regiment 584, naval sector commander Captain Steinbach, the acting Luftwaffe general, and Lieutenant Colonel Pedell, commander of Artillery Regiment for Special Duties 720, reported.
