Diary Entry

Communications order for the St Malo mining operation

1. Radio working frequency: Harbour Defence frequency (HSK), 3,455 kHz.

2. Radio silence is to be maintained as a rule and normally broken only upon contact with the enemy.

3. Cryptographic material: Radio Key M with special setting and the special Paula–Paula signal key in accordance with the annex. All other material — K-book, bb-table, Schnepfe table, Biber table, unused Key M rotors and ES cartridges — is to be put ashore.

4. The following stations also held the special material: MFS Guernsey, call sign Fritz Lucie Ubel; MFS Jersey, Fritz Sofie Toni; Grohne, Hans Fritz Paula Willi.

5. If radio traffic was necessary, S 112 was assigned HFNJ, Hans Fritz Nanni Jota, as its call sign.

6. Paula–Paula signals to S 112 were each to be repeated twice by Guernsey and Jersey, but no request for repetition was to be made if they were not understood. Within a Paula signal, S 112 was to sign with the commanding officer’s name; the Sea Commander was to open and sign with the admiral’s name.

7. Short signals: entering Jersey, QQHL (Quatsch Quatsch Hans Lucie); entering Guernsey, QQPE (Quatsch Quatsch Paula Emil). The short signal was to be keyed once slowly, without a special opening or closing sign. Shore stations were not to repeat or acknowledge it. Within the next 20 minutes its content was to be confirmed from shore by Paula signals. If no confirmation followed, the signal had not been heard and had to be repeated.

8. A request for artillery support at sea was to be made by a Pi–Pi signal with group AYP (Anton Ysop Paul), meaning ‘coastal-artillery support required in grid square …’, and AYQ (Anton Ysop Quatsch), meaning ‘cancel artillery support in grid square …’. Example: Pi Pi [identification]; 2231 [time group]; AYP [artillery support required]; 2692 W [grid and one-nautical-mile sub-square]; BHFNJ [call sign of S 112]. The shore radio station was to repeat and acknowledge the signal.
