Summary: PT 460 sailed for Channel Islands patrol at 1945. At 2109 PC 552 illuminated her with starshells. PT 460 fired recognition flares and then a single 37 mm round across the PC’s bow before identification was established. The same diary entry records two depth charges on a persistent radar target believed to be a periscope.
Editorial note: The printed time for the depth-charge episode appears as 1455 despite the evening sequence; it is not silently corrected. A suspected periscope is not confirmation of a submarine or a sinking.
