Diary Entry
10 December 1940 Normandy war diary — 10/12/1940
Weather: wind NW 6/7, overcast, occasional rain showers and thunderstorm.
0101: Red and green light signals are fired from Cap de la Hague, causing great alarm among an Army formation on the coast. A serious accident has occurred on the lighthouse; lacking another means of communication with the mainland, its crew seeks to attract attention with these signals.
1815: Tug Thor, travelling from Alderney to Cherbourg, sinks stern first after a probable detonation. Patrol boats 2005 and 2006 sail immediately on learning of the accident, but find nothing owing to darkness, poor visibility and weather, and abandon the search because of the high seas. [Signed Fink. Handwritten marginal query concerning report; partly illegible.]
