Diary Entry
1 September 1944 US Navy historical account of Bordeaux interception
Editorial note: Undated historical narrative. The contemporary September diary below differs on interception time and the reason for calling at Cherbourg.
An undated historical excerpt records Maloy north of Cézembre while its batteries shelled St Malo. HMS Oribi patrolled thirteen miles north of Alderney and HMS Ulysses south of Guernsey. At 1429 Maloy investigated a hospital ship bearing 024° true, thirteen miles from Cézembre. Identified as the German Bordeaux, she was travelling from St Helier to Cézembre without passengers. Maloy intercepted her at 48°53′ N 1°53′ W. Suspecting an attempt to evacuate the garrison, ANCXF ordered seizure. Ulysses placed a crew aboard and escorted her to Portland via Cherbourg for fuel.
