Diary Entry

1 October 1942 Island garrison on the early October army situation map

Date note: Map valid 1–6 October. Distinct army situation sheet; not a report of combat or proof of a new island deployment.

Seventh Army situation map, status 1–6 October 1942.

English key: red denotes Army reserves; black denotes Army Group reserves. The surviving scan is monochrome. Div. = division; Pz. = armoured/panzer; Fl. = air; A.K. = army corps; Horück = Army Rear Area Command; Stab = headquarters.

The map shows 319th Division on the Channel Islands, with Jersey, Guernsey and Sark labelled; 320th Division in the Cotentin; 716th Division around Caen; 335th, 709th and 333rd Divisions along the Brittany coast; 257th Division near Châteaulin; 337th Division inland in Brittany; 6th Panzer Division around Rennes; SS “Das Reich” around the Le Mans–Laval region; 7th Air Division in Normandy; XXV and LXXXIV Corps headquarters; and Seventh Army headquarters at Le Mans. The 14th Panzer headquarters symbol appears at Nogent-le-Rotrou.

A note at the eastern boundary reads “Boundary of the Military Commander's security area.” A Normandy annotation refers to a change from 1 October.

Translator's note: this is an English key to the principal map labels, not a transcription of every small annotation. The original map preserves unit symbols, boundaries and positions.
